Declaration Subtitle Review
It’s a good film by Mahesh Narayanan but what’s disturbing, is that it seems like an ape of Iranian cinema and it hurts to see artistry not being original.
The moral high ground that the lead character takes in the climax is vague because even though she refuses the foreign job offer, she still continues to work in the Delhi branch of the same criminals whom she deplores so she’s not really stopping to work with them anyways
Ariyippu is cinema at its best in terms of every craft involved. A pure film that stays so honest to its core realism. Realism is not a layer here it is the whole film. Starting from the writing staging blocking and performances we never even get to see a single shot or frame which is cinematic that Mahesh Narayanan has pulled off so beautifully.
Kunchacko Boban and Divya Prabha play the leading man and woman who are just terrific Divya holds the show with her intense and intimate performance the suffering uncertainty hopelessness all put together is conveyed through just her eyes and the way she looks never over or underlines anything which is what that makes the performance so intense.
Kunchacko Boban is amazing he has to hold on to everything and never emote or even show what he is thinking I can’t explain the mood of the film which is so complex and has suffered throughout which is the reality of many working-class people today and he nails it. The Declaration Bangla Subtitle blends two different events into one so organically which is the nature of the film itself.
Mahesh Narayanan has mentioned he is a big fan of Asghar Farhadi and Aristippus shows how much he follows and values Asghar from the very first frame of the film sets an Asghar Farhadi film mood and follows it throughout. The sensitive issues spoken about and also the difficulties of working-class people are blended so beautifully without any overdone.
The gold ring metaphor was so beautiful which was also never a so-called cinematic metaphor even though it was so carefully used without losing the core value of Declaration Bangla Subtitle reality.
Cinematography and editing stay loyal to the writing and directing without getting cinematic I keep using this word because the film isn’t that which is what keeps coming to my mind even after the watch I couldn’t recall a fancy shot or deliberate transitions.
With all due respect doing those is never a mistake but a film like ariyippu is also needs to reiterate how beautiful cinema where you can tell a story about two people and make every other people watching them feel that the two people belong to the viewer and makes us emote to them.
To end ariyippu is an added feather to the already feather-filled hat of Mahesh rattan and Malayalam cinema and no doubt it is a proud film that can be shown as a pure Indian cinema do watch and thank you Mahesh Narayanan Kunchako & Divya Prabha for giving an honest and pure cinema to witness ❤️
